Bioconversion, also known as biotransformation, is the conversion of organic materials into usable products via one or more enzymes. In other words, it is a chemical transformation catalyzed by enzymes.
Biotransformation is milder and more efficient than traditional chemical reactions. Generally, the transformation process is carried out under aqueous solution at room temperature. The stereoselectivity and transformation efficiency reaches over 99% in most cases. Therefore, the whole process is comparable to the material metabolism in biological cells, with few by-products, a high atomic economy, and decreased discharge of the three wastes in the industrial production process.
